ABOUT THE O-DEX

THE ODEX is a smartphone application and compatible device that is targeted for all audiences. From kids to adults, O-DEX provides a wide variety of information about the marine wildlife that exists within our oceans. This information includes native wildlife to a specific region, detailed information about each species, recent sightings, and photos submitted by users. The app is a great way to educate people about marine wildlife. It’s also a great source for people working in the oceanography industry as it provides a vast amount of information at the palm of their hands. O-DEX can be used in a variety of ways to achieve different purposes. Aquariums can use the application to have a digital interactive display next to various enclosures. Marine biologists can benefit by having an index on the go and being able to map out certain migration patterns for specific species. Tourist entertainment also gets a benefit (such as whale watching) by using the recently spotted feature and knowing which route to take for a viewing specific marine species. The possibilities are endless with O-DEX and it’s ever expanding user integrated index.

USER STORIES

Riley, a marine biologist, often spends her time out in the ocean doing field work in her respective career. During one of her trips, she encounters a familiar animal and can’t identify it, but is looking to learn more about the mysterious animal. The ocean, being as vast as it is, hosts extraordinarily numerous amounts of species within. Because there are easily too many for anybody to remember, even marine biologists like Riley, the O-DEX comes in handy. Using the app, Valencia snaps a picture of the creature she spotted which then filters through a database helping her identify it as a Pacific Blackdragon. Without O-DEX, Riley would not have been able to identify the creature and may have missed an opportunity to study other unknown aspects about it. With the O-DEX, however, Riley was able to continue her research in a more productive manner.
Jack is a tourist visiting the Monterey Bay region for a whale watching expedition with his friends. After a short time, they had a great opportunity arise and spotted a humpback whale in the water during it’s migration. Wanting to understand more specifics about the whale, Jack got out his O-DEX app and immediately looked up the specifics about the humpback. Amongst learning that they are capable of migrating the globe, he learned additional information about their population size, where they’re usually spotted, and a whole gallery of other user submitted photos. As a bonus, Jack was able to drop a notification to other local users about the sighting in case they were interested and wanted to witness the migration in person as well. O-DEX has become a useful tool for Jack and has made his whale watching experience that much better.

OUR MISSION

Our team behind O-Dex was inspired by our love for the ocean and it's many beautiful creatures. With the changing climate and increasing human population, we wanted a way to safely connect others just like us to the ocean's animals. The O-Dex was our solution to do so while being able to educate others about conservation and increase protection of marine biodiversity. The O-Dex is for people of all ages, occupation, and background, that feels the same passion as we do about our great neighbors under the sea.
